REVIEW ROUND-UP: WANDE COAL “WANTED” ALBUM

Six years ago, the talented Wande Coal broke into the music scene with his debut album Mushin 2 Mo’Hits, quickly making a name for himself in the process. In a time period dominated by Mo-hits and its array of artist, Wande Coal has always been able to standout rivaling D’Banj for hit songs.

In the years to follow the artist has been linked to a bevy of headlines including the fallout of Mo’Hits Records, discontent at Mavin Records, and problems with his long time collaborator Don Jazzy. That being said Wande Coal truly has a nat for crafting catchy hit songs, keeping him in the public’s eye for years. Fun songs like “Rotate” in 2013, smash hit “Baby Hello” in 2014 and his 2015 Patoranking collaboration “My Woman My Everything”,keep the star on the airway.

So last October (26, 2015) when Wande Coal released his long awaited sophomore album aptly titled “Wanted” featuring the hit single “Ashimapeyin” expectations were at an all time high. Our team is currently working on the Africa Chart’s album review, but in the meantime, what is the rest of the critical world saying about it?

In a two out of five star review in TooXclusive, Ogaga Sakpaide writes,

Despite the rare flashes of brilliance proving that Wande’s instrument is still intact, “Wanted” shows no artistic growth and depth, rather it highlights Wande’s weakness as a poor story teller and his inability to be creative when under immense pressure to deliver

In Jaguda, Sifon pens a review not as harsh

Generally, this is a good album, but not a great album though. It is exactly what I expected from Wande. I didn’t expect him to give me an album like M2M after being away from the game for so long, but I did expect an album that could be good enough. I mean its Wande Coal we are talking about here, but I have hopes for Wande still. My only prayer is that he should not make us wait for another six years before we get an album.

Tola Sarumi at NotJustOk rated the album 5/10, going on to share

Adura, Monster, Lowkey, Ashimapeyin, and Superwoman are the album’s best tracks. Four good new songs on a 17 track album is not good enough, Wanted has been found wanting but that said, it’s nice to see Wande Coal back as a pop performer.

Pulse Nigeria explains,

Wande Coal’s album returns to a scene which has left his space untouched in the industry. No one singer is the total package, or comes close to it as Wande Coal has. “Wanted” album, more patchwork than conceptual album, but it throws in Wande Coal’s superior hat into the ring. A hat that combines dexterity of sound, and a shrewd understanding of the market. Wande Coal is back to his art. This is good for Nigeria.
